Marrequinha-americana / Green-winged Teal

Marrequinha-americana/Green-winged Teal, Anas carolinensis - Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal

The difference between an Eurasian Teal and a Green-winged Teal is not great. But one stripe makes all the difference -- between staying in Lisbon and driving 200km to Montemor-o-Velho to see this transatlantic vagrant.

Galeirão-de-crista / Red-knobbed Coot

Galeirão-de-crista/Red-knobbed Coot, Fulica cristata - Alcochete, Portugal

Quem sabe fiquem para criar?/To see a red-knobbed coot in Portugal nowadays is quite a special happening. Gone are the days when the famed hunter Carlos de Bragança (known amongst other things for having been king of Portugal) would have killed seventy something birds in one afternoon at the Óbidos lagoon -- according to his dashing reports. Today in Europe, this species is very rare, and breeds regularly only in Spain, so the sighting of five birds near Alcochete is of great significance. Who knows -- maybe they will stay and breed?

Trinta-réis-grande / Large-billed Tern

Em Manaus:/In Manaus:

And those, how do you call those?"
"Esses daí a gente chama de gaivota."/"Those we call them gulls."

Trinta-réis-grande/Large-billed Tern, Phaetusa simplex - Manaus, Amazonas

É frequente encontrar casos semelhantes no Novo Mundo. It is usual to find similar cases in the New World. Whoever left the Old World to colonize the Americas, upon reaching the other shore of the Atlantic and coming across birds that looked more or less like the European birds, named them according to what they knew. This happened in North America, where the buntings were taken for sparrows, and also in South America. In this particular case this species of tern has a proper local name -- Large-billed Tern. But in the capital of the Amazonas state, where true gulls are very unusual, a Large-billed Tern is similar enough to be taken by one.

Os Galos-monteses mais próximos encontram-se na cordilheira Cantábrica - e infelizmente com um futuro incerto e preocupante,/Extinct in Portugal about a century ago, the Capercaillie had its last stronghold here in what is now the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. The closest Capercaillies can be found on the Cantabrian chain -- but unfortunately the also face an uncertain and worrying future.
