Ainda esboços da mesma visita às Salinas de Alverca. As garças de grande porte pareciam sofrer mais com o calor que os pequenos Carraceiros e Garças-brancas-pequenas - arfavam de asas abertas unidas em concha. E assim se mantiveram até as temperaturas baixarem um pouco, o que me permitiu desenhá-las com calma (interessava-me particularmente a Garça-vermelha, que obviamente foi a que menos tempo me concedeu)./Still sketches from the same visit to the Alverca Salt Ponds. The herons seemed to suffer more with the heat than the Cattle and Little White Egrets -- panting with stretched wings that closed like a bowl. And in this position they stayed until temperatures dropped a little, which allowed me to sketch them leisurely (I was particularly interested in sketching the Purple Heron, obviously that one bird was the one that gave me the least amount of time as a model).

Como foi o caso este fim-de-semana num dos tanques da Salinas de Alverca, devido à subida das temperaturas./...unless a pond experiences eutrophication and with the consequent anoxia fishes start to die. As was the case this weekend at one of the tanks of the Alverca salt pans, due to rising temperature.

E com tanto alimento disponível, os comensais não se fizeram esperar - vieram às dezenas - Garças-reais de todas as idades, Garças-brancas-pequenas, um bando de Carraceiros, um casal de Garças-vermelhas - e até uma Cegonha-branca e um Colhereiro vieram molhar o bico (literalmente)./And with such an abundant food supply, feasters did not took long to show up -- they came by the dozen -- Grey Herons of all ages, Little White Egrets, a flock of Cattle Herons, a pair of Purple Herons -- and even a White Stork and an Eurasian Spoonbill turned up for the banquet.

Um bando de Guinchos-comuns, recém chegados da migração banqueteou-se, sendo momentaneamente acompanhado por um bando nómada de Tagazes. E o macho do casal de Águias-sapeiras - causando grande agitação numa fêmea de Pato-de-bico-vermelho que conduzia as suas oito crias já bem desenvolvidas -  ia delicadamente apanhando o peixe morto a boiar - o qual era posteriormente levado pela fêmea em pleno ar./A flock of Black-headed Gulls freshly arrived from their migration gorged themselves, and for a moment were joined by a marauding flock of Gull-billed Terns. And the male of the Western Marsh Harrier -- causing great distress to a female Red-crested Pochard who tended for her eight well developed ducklings -- delicately snatched floating dead fish which was later taken by the female in mid-air.

Uma semana volvida e as crias de Garça-real estão quase irreconhecíveis. Praticamente da dimensão de aves adultas e totalmente emplumadas, as duas garças vivem os últimos dias no ninho por entre ensaios de vôo e cuidados com as penas./One week after the Grey Heron chicks are almost unrecognisable. Roughly the size of adult birds and fully feathered, the two herons spend their last days at the nest between preening and flight attempts.

Apesar de bem alimentadas, a competição é grande, ocorrendo frequentemente escaramuças. Arrufando as penas, as crias medem forças e definem hierarquias. Por vezes a mais desenvolvida chega mesmo a matar a mais fraca. Neste ninho porém as hipóteses de se verificar este comportamento - conhecido como Cainismo - são praticamente nulas uma vez que ambas as crias se equivalem./Even though well fed, competition is great amongst the young birds, with frequent skirmishes. Ruffling their feathers, the chicks compare strengths and define hierarchies. Sometimes the strongest one ends up killing the weakest. At this nest however chances for this behaviour - known as Cainism - to happen are practically none since both chicks have approximately the same size and strength.

A outra cria terá de esperar - e tentar ter mais sorte no regresso do progenitor./Upon the arrival of the other parent, the first one leaves to fish or hunt. The chicks get very agitated, trying to capture the adult bird's attention. One of them manages to control the beak of the adult bird, swallowing a whole mullet. The other chick will have to wait - and try to be luckier when another parent returns.
