Abetouro / Great Bittern

Mas a certas aves, não se diz não./Light was not the best -- the Sun had just set. And it was cold, adding to the cold felt for siting almost two hours sketching. Certainly these were not the best possible conditions. But to certain birds, you cannot say no.

Abetouro/Great Bittern, Botaurus stellaris - Alcochete

Aceita-se o que se consegue, e agradece-se./A Great Bittern walked slowly among the stubs on the rice fields. Watching, waiting. Hunting frogs and crayfish. Vanishing through the small canals. Every now and then it would stop and look. And it was during these minutes, while light lasted, that I took some notes of this particularly illusive and discrete bird -- incredibly discrete for such a large bird. These were not great sketches -- but to the birds you cannot say no one cannot ask for more. You just accept whatever you get, and be thankful for that.
