Atlas das Aves Invernantes e Migradoras / (Portuguese) Wintering and Migrating Bird Atlas

"Se possui conhecimentos de identificação de aves, diurnas ou nocturnas, inscreva-se como voluntário e faça parte de um projecto, que será certamente um marco na história da Ornitologia portuguesa!" É deste modo que a Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves estende o convite a todos os interessados neste projeto que visa suprir uma lacuna na ornitologia nacional - a inexistência de um atlas de aves invernantes e migradoras./"If you have bird identification skills, whether these are diurnal or nocturnal birds, join as a voluntary and become part of a project that will surely be a landmark on the history of the Portuguese Ornithology!" This is the way the Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves (BirdLife International partner) introduces the project and extends the invitation to all interested parties to join and participate in this project that aims to produce the first atlas of migrating and wintering birds of Portugal.

Este projeto permitirá um maior conhecimento da distribuição, abundância e fenologia das aves que migram e invernam ao longo de Portugal. A Escrevedeira-das-neves será um invernante regular em Portugal? Onde se encontram as maiores concentrações de Milherangos? E qual a distribuição do Cagarraz no território português? É possível que as respostas a estas questões sejam reveladas através deste projeto. Algumas já se conhecem, podendo agora ficar compiladas nesta que será uma obra de referência./This project will allow for a better knowledge of distribution, abundance and fenology of the Portuguese wintering and migrating birds. Is the Snow bunting a regular wintering species? Where can one find the highest concentrations of Black-tailed godwits? And what is the distribution of the Black-necked grebe? Some of these answers might be revealed throughout this project. Some are already known and can be gathered on this book that will surely become a reference work.

De Vuelta con el Cuaderno

Falta pouco mais que um mês para o início da terceira edição de De Vuelta con el Cuaderno, em Teruel, Espanha. Serão três dias intensos dedicados aos cadernos de campo, de investigação e documentação./We are just a little over a month away from the beginning of the third edition of De Vuelta con el Cuaderno in Teruel, Spain. Three full days dedicated to field, research and documentation sketchbooks.

Renovo o convite a todos os interessados a participarem neste evento - da parte que me toca vou contando os dias com grande expectativa. Palpita-me que se aproxima uma road-trip Ibérica de Lisboa a Teruel, cheia de esboços, aves e calor. E uma tapa aqui e além, obviamente - ¿cómo no?/All interested are once again invited to participate in this event - me, I am counting the days with great expectations. I sense an Iberian road-trip is a-coming, from Lisbon to Teruel - with many sketches, birds and heat. And obviously a few tapas along the way - ¿cómo no?

Há alguns anos atrás, fui convidado pela revista Textos e Pretextos a adaptar o conto de Maria Velho da Costa "Pérola e os Porcos", para uma edição de homenagem a esta autora. O resultado foi uma banda desenhada de oito páginas, da qual aqui fica a primeira prancha./A few years ago I got an invitation from the magazine Textos e Pretextos to adapt the short story "Pérola e os Porcos" by Maria Velho da Costa for a special issue dedicated to this author. The result was an eight-page graphic novel, from which the first page is shown here.

Duas das minhas espécies favoritas do poster do projeto NestWatch. Cada ave deste projeto foi feita separadamente e, uma vez terminadas todas as ilustrações de aves, foram digitalmente inseridas no poster previamente desenhado./Two of my favourite species from the project NestWatch poster. Each bird was rendered separately and, once all the bird illustrations were completed, digitally inserted into the previously drawn poster.

Bacurau-das-praias / Sand-coloured Nightjar

Numa barra de areia de um afluente do rio Solimões, onde repousavam Talha-mares-americanos, Trinta-réis-grandes e Trinta-réis-anões, uma ave até então imperceptível na areia branca levantou vôo./At a sand bar of a tributary of the Solimões river, where Black Skimmers, Large-billed and Yellow-billed Terns roosted, a bird that had remained imperceptible on the sand took off.

Confiando no seu mimetismo, o Bacurau-das-praias pousou pouco mais à frente num tronco. Aproximei-me com cautela e sentei-me. A uns 20 metros da ave, fiquei meia hora a interpretar forma e padrão, e a tirar apontamentos. Levantei-me sem pressas e fui desenhar os Talha-mares./Trusting its mimicry, the Sand-coloured Nightjar landed on a log not far away from where it started. I carefully bridged most of the distance between me and the bird and sat down. Spent about half an hour interpreting shape and patter and collecting notes, 20 meters from the bird. Slowly rose and went sketching the Black Skimmers.

A maioria dos adultos de Gaivota-d'asa-escura já migrou para outras paragens no Norte da Europa. Por estas alturas encontram-se por cá sobretudo aves imaturas, que se poupam ao esforço migrador./The majority of adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls has already migrated to northern Europe. At around this time in Portugal one finds mostly immature birds, who have spared themselves from the migration effort.
