An excellent pretext to visit Castro Verde and get to know the worthy work that Liga para a Protecção da Natureza develops here.

 Diz-se do Metropolitano de Lisboa que este pode deixar de funcionar diariamente até à uma da manhã. Sinceramente espero que tal não suceda por um bom número de razões - por todos quantos dependem deste transporte público para se deslocarem, pelo menor impacte ambiental que significa o uso de transportes coletivos, pela poupança de dinheiro em combustíveis e parqueamento, por retirar automóveis do centro urbano de Lisboa. E também - esta última razão bem egoísta - pelos modelos cansados e disponíveis a serem desenhados no final de mais um dia. / They say that the Lisbon Metro may cease to be open daily until one o'clock. I do hope that such will not happen, for a number of reasons -- for all of those who depend on this public transport to move around, for the lesser environmental impact implied on the use of public transportation, by the money saving from gas and parking, for removing cars from the Lisbon centre. And also -- may I add selfishly -- for all the tired and ready to be sketched models it provides after one more day.

Num café em Lagos, um senhor seguia atentamente o Real Madrid na televisão. O tempo que levou este desenho a fazer foi o tempo que levou o Real a marcar o 2˚ (Cristiano Ronaldo) e 3˚ golo (Marcelo) ao Sporting Gijón./At a café in Lagos, a man was attentively following Real Madrid's match against Sporting Gijón on the television. The time it took me to sketch this was the time it took Real to score the second (Cristiano Ronaldo) and the third (Marcelo) goals.

Em 2008 fui contatado pela Ciência Viva para ilustrar uma banda desenhada sobre o sistema imunitário humano. Poucos meses depois, o trabalho estava concluído - e a referida banda desenhada disponível online./Back in 2008 I was contacted by Ciência Viva to illustrate a graphic novel about the human immune system. Few months later, the work was concluded -- and the graphic novel available on-line.

Também conhecida como Ave-fria (por ser essencialmente invernante), os Abibes são uma das emblemáticas espécies dos campos agrícolas durante o Inverno./Also know in Portuguese as Cold-bird (due to the fact that it is mostly a wintering species in Portugal), Northern Lapwings are one of the most conspicuous species found during Winter in agricultural fields.

Negrinhas / Tufted Ducks

A Negrinha é um pequeno pato mergulhador que, apesar de irregularmente criar em Portugal, é sobretudo um visitante de Inverno neste país. Os números desta espécie em Portugal têm vindo a diminuir, possivelmente devido a condições mais favoráveis noutras paragens mais a norte./Tufted ducks are small diving ducks that can be found in Portugal during the Winter months -- although they have bred on an irregular basis before. The numbers of birds that visit Portugal have decreased, possibly due to more favourable conditions elsewhere in central/northern Europe.

Negrinha/Tufted Duck, Aythya fuligula - Salinas de Alverca

Nas salinas de Alverca, um pequeno bando de Negrinhas alimentava-se num tanque mais profundo. Treze aves, no total. Durante a maior parte do ano de 2011, uma fêmea solitária manteve-se neste local. Talvez faça agora parte deste pequeno grupo de aves./At the Alverca salt pans, a small flock of Tufted ducks fed on a deeper pond. Thirteen birds in total. Throughout most of 2011, a lone female was seen at this site. Perhaps she is now part of this small groups of birds.

Ringtail, Bassariscus astutus

Não é frequente ilustrar mamíferos, o que não quer dizer que não o faça pontualmente, como neste caso. O Ringtail (literalmente cauda-anelada, desconheço o nome em Português - haverá um?) é um pequeno carnívoro bastante tímido da família dos guaxins, cuja distribuição se reparte pelo sudoeste dos Estados Unidos da América e grande parte do México./It is not often that I illustrate mammals, but occasionally it does happen. The Ringtail is a rather shy small carnivore related to raccoons, that can be found throughout the South-west of the United States of America and most of Mexico.

Chovia um pouco, mas isso não parecia incomodar o bando de Marrequinhas que se alimentava numa lagoa da lezíria Ribatejana. Dentro de água aves saltavam (literalmente) de um lado para o outro, ou ocultavam-se parcialmente debaixo de água - acabei por me concentrar nas aves das margens./It drizzled, but that did not seemed to bother the flock of Eurasian Teals that was feeding on a Ribatejo grasslands' lagoon. The birds in the water hopped (literally) or submerged -- which made me focus on the shore birds.

Abetouro / Great Bittern

A luz não era a melhor - o Sol acabava de se pôr. E estava frio, a juntar ao frio de estar imóvel durante quase duas horas sentado a desenhar. Não estavam portanto reunidas as melhores condições. Mas a certas aves, não se diz não./Light was not the best -- the Sun had just set. And it was cold, adding to the cold felt for siting almost two hours sketching. Certainly these were not the best possible conditions. But to certain birds, you cannot say no.

Abetouro/Great Bittern, Botaurus stellaris - Alcochete

Um Abetouro caminhava lentamente no restolho de arroz. Espreitando, esperando. Caçando rãs e lagostins. Desaparecendo por entre os regos no campo. De quando em vez parava, e observava. E foi nestes minutos, enquanto a luz deixou, que tirei alguns apontamentos desta ave particularmente esquiva e discreta - incrivelmente discreta para uma ave tão grande. Não são grandes esboços-- mas às aves a que não se diz não não se pede mais. Aceita-se o que se consegue, e agradece-se./A Great Bittern walked slowly among the stubs on the rice fields. Watching, waiting. Hunting frogs and crayfish. Vanishing through the small canals. Every now and then it would stop and look. And it was during these minutes, while light lasted, that I took some notes of this particularly illusive and discrete bird -- incredibly discrete for such a large bird. These were not great sketches -- but to the birds you cannot say no one cannot ask for more. You just accept whatever you get, and be thankful for that.

Volvidos pouco mais de quatro meses desde a realização do 2º Simpósio Internacional de Urban Sketching, surge agora um livro resultante desse mesmo encontro pela mão da editora Quimera. O livro reúne esboços de cerca de 200 pessoas, provenientes de mais de 20 países, numa edição de 252 páginas. A não perder./A little more than four months after the II International Urban Sketching Symposium comes the publication of a book (published by Quimera), resulting from that meeting. This book gathers sketches from roughly 200 sketchers, from over 20 countries, on a 252 pages edition. A must have.
