De há uns anos para cá que uma colónia de Mainatos-de-poupa se tem mantido junto ao forte de São Julião da Barra, perto de Carcavelos. Esta espécie originária do sudeste Asiático ter-se-á aqui establecido possivelmente a partir de fugas de cativeiro. O problema com as espécies exóticas é a imprevisibilidade do seu impacto nas espécies nativas - veja-se o exemplo das Mimosas, que asfixiam as florestas Portuguesas. Donde, o melhor mesmo é não arriscar - e evitar a todo o custo fugas ou introduções deliberadas./Since a few years ago, a colony of Crested Mynas has been located near the fort of São Julião da Barra, near Carcavelos. This species, originally from Southeast Asia, established itself here probably from escaped cage-birds. The problem with exotic species is the unpredictability of their impact on native species -- like Silk Trees that choke the Portuguese forests. The best thing is not to risk it -- and avoid at all costs escapes or deliberate introductions.
Em tempos idos, existiam pinguins do hemisfério norte. E não foi há tanto tempo assim, ainda no século XIX por cá andavam. Os pinguins originais, não eram no entanto membros da família Spheniscidae, como as aves austrais de hoje em dia - mas sim membros da família Alcidae (da qual fazem parte Airos e Papagaios-do-mar, entre outros)./Some time ago, there were penguins on the Northern hemisphere. Not that long ago, we still had them in the XIX century. The original penguins, however, were not members of the Spheniscidae family, like the austral birds of nowadays -- but rather members of the Alcidae family (like the Common Guillemots and the Atlantic Puffins, to name a few).

Unfortunately this species, when passing near Portugal, rarely comes near the coast. But with luck, at the right place and with particular atmospheric conditions, we can be rewarded with a fleeting glimpse of this wonderful bird.
Os Paínhos-de-cauda-forcada estão a passar por Portugal. Quase totalmente escondido na vegetação do arrozal, um imaturo de Flamingo alimenta-se de bagos de arroz. Este comportamento oportunista torna a relação entre aves e produtores de arroz tensa. Fica a questão, quando tomamos o habitat de outros animais, não devemos esperar que o mesmo aconteça? Tudo tem o seu preço - e neste caso são bagos de arroz. Que bem vistas as coisas são baixo preço pela presença destas aves./Almost totally hidden on the rice-field's vegetation, an immature Greater Flamingo feeds on rice grains. This opportunistic behaviour creates a tense relation between birds and rice producers. The question is: if we take other animals' habitat, should we not expect the same? Everything has its price -- and in this case, the price are rice grains. And, all things considered, is a low price for the presence of these birds.
Em Portugal, a Coruja-do-nabal é considerada uma espécie invernante. É possível que tenha criado ou crie na região de Montalegre, mas até ser confirmada a nidificação, mantém o estatuto de visitante invernal./In Portugal, Short-eared Owls are considered wintering species. It is possible that it may have bred -- or breeds in the region of Montalegre, but until proof of nesting arises, the status of Winter visitor remains.

Na lezíria Ribatejana, uma Coruja-do-nabal pousada num terreno arado, controlava a área circundante. Durante hora e meia manteve-se no mesmo local (tendo desaparecido misteriosamente num rego por um minuto), rodando apenas a cabeça em todas as direções - coisa que me deixou a mim com a cabeça a andar à roda para a desenhar./On the Ribatejo grasslands, a Short-eared Owl on a ploughed field scans the surrounding area. For an hour and half, it remained on the same spot (mysteriously disappearing for only one minute in a ditch), turning its head in all directions -- leaving me with my head spinning around from trying to sketch it.
A Berlenga testemunha o engano do Atlântico. Acontece - e não podemos levá-lo a mal por isso. Inicialmente (durante o Mesozóico) tentou formar-se entre a Berlenga e Peniche, rasgando posteriormente entre a esta e a América do Norte. Estando o Atlântico formado, a Berlenga continua a testemunhar enganos. Ou acasos, se preferirmos./The Berlenga island is a witness of the Atlantic's mistake. It happens -- and one should not judge it too harshly for that. Initially (during the Mesozoic) it tried to form between Berlenga and Peniche, later ripping between Berlenga and North America. The Atlantic is now formed, but Berlenga still witnesses mistakes. Or random happenings, if you will.
Um Bufo-pequeno na Berlenga é quase um peixe fora de água. Numa ilha sem árvores (as três figueiras presentes dificilmente se qualificam como tal) esta espécie encontra pouco habitat propício. Talvez tenha sido a exaustão que levou dois Bufos-pequenos migradores a pousar na ilha. Seja qual foi a razão, eles aí estavam. Mas não se alongaram na estadia, no dia seguinte tinham desaparecido./A Long-eared Owl on Berlenga is almost a fish out of water. On a treeless island (the three fig trees present hardly qualify as such) this species finds little suitable habitat. Perhaps exhaustion led two Long-eared Owls to halt their migration and land on the island. Whatever the reason, there they were. But not for long, next day they were gone.
Há menos de uma década, ver Íbis-preta em Portugal era complicado. Uma que fosse. Aves isoladas eram encontradas de quando em vez. Assim foi durante muitos anos. Até que, de uma ou outra ave, pequenos bandos começaram a ser vistos. Paúl do Secorio, Palmela - e sobretudo Alcochete. De algumas aves, passaram a ser registados bandos de algumas dezenas. A primeira centena. Algumas centenas. Neste momento, em locais como a lezíria de Vila Franca de Xira, encontrar um milhar de íbis não é raro, tendo inclusivamente criado recentemente - a primeira vez que tal foi registado em Portugal./Less than a decade ago, seeing Glossy Ibises in Portugal was a complicated matter. Even just one. Single birds were spotted every now and then. And this was the norm for many years. Until, from single birds, small flock started to be seen. Paúl do Secorio, Palmela -- and Alcochete. From a few birds, flocks of a few dozens were registered. Then the first hundred. A few hundreds. Nowadays, in places like the grasslands of Vila Franca de Xira, to find a thousand ibises is not unusual -- the species has in recent years even been recorded for the first time breeding in Portugal.

Esta abundância recente deve-se a um aumento espetacular das colónias Espanholas - nomeadamente as encontradas em Doñana. Sabemo-lo através do programa de anilhagem que tem marcado centenas de aves no ninho com anihas de cor, passíveis de serem lidas por observadores de aves. Quando uma ave anilhada é detetada no campo e a anilha lida corretamente, os anilhadores ficam com a informação do paradeiro das aves, e os observadores com a informação da proveniência das mesmas./This recent abundance is linked to the spectacular increase of the Spanish colonies -- namely the ones found in Doñana. We know this due to the ringing program that has ringed hundred of nestlings with colour rings, which can be read by birdwatchers. When a ringed bird is found in the field and its ring properly read, ringers obtain information on the whereabouts of the bird and the bird watchers gain knowledge of where the bird came from.
O progressivo aumento nos efetivos destas aves foi registado por inúmeros observadores, que reportavam as suas observações ao Noticiário Ornitológico da Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves - sendo este posteriormente distribuido gratuitamente via email a todos os interessados, e posteriormente compilado no Anuário Ornitológico./The progressive increase in this species' numbers was registered by several bird watchers, who reported their observations to the Noticiário Ornitológico -- this being freely sent by email to all interested parties, and later compiled on a yearbook.
No início do Outono, durante a apanha do arroz, é frequente ver grandes bandos de íbis na lezíria Ribatejana, aproveitando a enorme quantidade de lagostins exóticos (e incrivelmente nocivos para os ecossistemas) que ficam expostos após a drenagem dos arrozais. É portanto uma excelente altura para observar esta espécie, ainda há poucos anos tão rara por estas paragens./In the early Autumn, during the rice harvest, it is frequent to see big flocks of ibises on the Ribatejo grasslands, taking advantage of the huge quantity of exotic Louisiana Crayfish (an invasive species very harmful to ecosystems) exposed by the draining of the rice fields. An excellent time to watch this species, which until recently was so hard to find.

Alguns esboços de um dos dois Pilritos-de-colete, que se encontrava juntamente com os Pilritos-acanelados na Foz do Sizandro.Foram sem sombra de dúvidas das aves mais cooperantes que já desenhei - estes esboços foram feitos a menos de 4m, com a ave bastante confortável com a minha presença./Some sketches of one of the two Pectoral Sandpipers, found along the Buff-breasted Sandpipers at Foz do Sizandro. Without doubt, the most cooperative birds I have sketched so far -- these sketches were rendered less than 4m away, with the bird quite comfortable with my presence there.
