Sinceramente espero que tal não suceda por um bom número de razões - por todos quantos dependem deste transporte público para se deslocarem, pelo menor impacte ambiental que significa o uso de transportes coletivos, pela poupança de dinheiro em combustíveis e parqueamento, por retirar automóveis do centro urbano de Lisboa. E também - esta última razão bem egoísta - pelos modelos cansados e disponíveis a serem desenhados no final de mais um dia. / They say that the Lisbon Metro may cease to be open daily until one o'clock. I do hope that such will not happen, for a number of reasons -- for all of those who depend on this public transport to move around, for the lesser environmental impact implied on the use of public transportation, by the money saving from gas and parking, for removing cars from the Lisbon centre. And also -- may I add selfishly -- for all the tired and ready to be sketched models it provides after one more day.

Os números desta espécie em Portugal têm vindo a diminuir, possivelmente devido a condições mais favoráveis noutras paragens mais a norte./Tufted ducks are small diving ducks that can be found in Portugal during the Winter months -- although they have bred on an irregular basis before. The numbers of birds that visit Portugal have decreased, possibly due to more favourable conditions elsewhere in central/northern Europe.

Nas salinas de Alverca, um pequeno bando de Negrinhas alimentava-se num tanque mais profundo. Treze aves, no total. Durante a maior parte do ano de 2011, uma fêmea solitária manteve-se neste local. Talvez faça agora parte deste pequeno grupo de aves./At the Alverca salt pans, a small flock of Tufted ducks fed on a deeper pond. Thirteen birds in total. Throughout most of 2011, a lone female was seen at this site. Perhaps she is now part of this small groups of birds.

Mas a certas aves, não se diz não./Light was not the best -- the Sun had just set. And it was cold, adding to the cold felt for siting almost two hours sketching. Certainly these were not the best possible conditions. But to certain birds, you cannot say no.

Um Abetouro caminhava lentamente no restolho de arroz. Espreitando, esperando. Caçando rãs e lagostins. Desaparecendo por entre os regos no campo. De quando em vez parava, e observava. E foi nestes minutos, enquanto a luz deixou, que tirei alguns apontamentos desta ave particularmente esquiva e discreta - incrivelmente discreta para uma ave tão grande. Não são grandes esboços-- mas às aves a que não se diz não não se pede mais. Aceita-se o que se consegue, e agradece-se./A Great Bittern walked slowly among the stubs on the rice fields. Watching, waiting. Hunting frogs and crayfish. Vanishing through the small canals. Every now and then it would stop and look. And it was during these minutes, while light lasted, that I took some notes of this particularly illusive and discrete bird -- incredibly discrete for such a large bird. These were not great sketches -- but to the birds you cannot say no one cannot ask for more. You just accept whatever you get, and be thankful for that.

Pessoalmente gosto de desenhar aves embalsamadas. Ou de desenhar as peles. Para determinados pormenores é muito útil. Para outras coisas, pode ser um desastre. Se fosse utilizar numa ilustração final a forma deste Alfaiate diretamente como a captei neste estudo, seria um desastre. Donde, há que ter em atenção que as peças podem ter alguns problemas - como no caso deste Alfaiate, que apresenta um peito demasiado projetado e exagerado./Personally, I like to draw mounted birds. Or bird skins. For some details, I find this rather useful. For some others, it can be a total disaster. One should pay attention to specimens that might have some problems -- like this Pied Avocet, whose chest projects too much.

No fundo, nada como desenhar a cores e (sobretudo) ao vivo./All in all, there is nothing like drawing from life.

De há uns anos para cá que uma colónia de Mainatos-de-poupa se tem mantido junto ao forte de São Julião da Barra, perto de Carcavelos. Esta espécie originária do sudeste Asiático ter-se-á aqui establecido possivelmente a partir de fugas de cativeiro. O problema com as espécies exóticas é a imprevisibilidade do seu impacto nas espécies nativas - veja-se o exemplo das Mimosas, que asfixiam as florestas Portuguesas. Donde, o melhor mesmo é não arriscar - e evitar a todo o custo fugas ou introduções deliberadas./Since a few years ago, a colony of Crested Mynas has been located near the fort of São Julião da Barra, near Carcavelos. This species, originally from Southeast Asia, established itself here probably from escaped cage-birds. The problem with exotic species is the unpredictability of their impact on native species -- like Silk Trees that choke the Portuguese forests. The best thing is not to risk it -- and avoid at all costs escapes or deliberate introductions.

Os pinguins originais, não eram no entanto membros da família Spheniscidae, como as aves austrais de hoje em dia - mas sim membros da família Alcidae (da qual fazem parte Airos e Papagaios-do-mar, entre outros)./Some time ago, there were penguins on the Northern hemisphere. Not that long ago, we still had them in the XIX century. The original penguins, however, were not members of the Spheniscidae family, like the austral birds of nowadays -- but rather members of the Alcidae family (like the Common Guillemots and the Atlantic Puffins, to name a few).

Quase totalmente escondido na vegetação do arrozal, um imaturo de Flamingo alimenta-se de bagos de arroz. Este comportamento oportunista torna a relação entre aves e produtores de arroz tensa. Fica a questão, quando tomamos o habitat de outros animais, não devemos esperar que o mesmo aconteça? Tudo tem o seu preço - e neste caso são bagos de arroz. Que bem vistas as coisas são baixo preço pela presença destas aves./Almost totally hidden on the rice-field's vegetation, an immature Greater Flamingo feeds on rice grains. This opportunistic behaviour creates a tense relation between birds and rice producers. The question is: if we take other animals' habitat, should we not expect the same? Everything has its price -- and in this case, the price are rice grains. And, all things considered, is a low price for the presence of these birds.

Durante hora e meia manteve-se no mesmo local (tendo desaparecido misteriosamente num rego por um minuto), rodando apenas a cabeça em todas as direções - coisa que me deixou a mim com a cabeça a andar à roda para a desenhar./On the Ribatejo grasslands, a Short-eared Owl on a ploughed field scans the surrounding area. For an hour and half, it remained on the same spot (mysteriously disappearing for only one minute in a ditch), turning its head in all directions -- leaving me with my head spinning around from trying to sketch it.

A Berlenga testemunha o engano do Atlântico. Acontece - e não podemos levá-lo a mal por isso. Inicialmente (durante o Mesozóico) tentou formar-se entre a Berlenga e Peniche, rasgando posteriormente entre a esta e a América do Norte. Estando o Atlântico formado, a Berlenga continua a testemunhar enganos. Ou acasos, se preferirmos./The Berlenga island is a witness of the Atlantic's mistake. It happens -- and one should not judge it too harshly for that. Initially (during the Mesozoic) it tried to form between Berlenga and Peniche, later ripping between Berlenga and North America. The Atlantic is now formed, but Berlenga still witnesses mistakes. Or random happenings, if you will.

Um Bufo-pequeno na Berlenga é quase um peixe fora de água. Numa ilha sem árvores (as três figueiras presentes dificilmente se qualificam como tal) esta espécie encontra pouco habitat propício. Talvez tenha sido a exaustão que levou dois Bufos-pequenos migradores a pousar na ilha. Seja qual foi a razão, eles aí estavam. Mas não se alongaram na estadia, no dia seguinte tinham desaparecido./A Long-eared Owl on Berlenga is almost a fish out of water. On a treeless island (the three fig trees present hardly qualify as such) this species finds little suitable habitat. Perhaps exhaustion led two Long-eared Owls to halt their migration and land on the island. Whatever the reason, there they were. But not for long, next day they were gone.

Há menos de uma década, ver Íbis-preta em Portugal era complicado. Uma que fosse. Aves isoladas eram encontradas de quando em vez. Assim foi durante muitos anos. Até que, de uma ou outra ave, pequenos bandos começaram a ser vistos. Paúl do Secorio, Palmela - e sobretudo Alcochete. De algumas aves, passaram a ser registados bandos de algumas dezenas. A primeira centena. Algumas centenas. Neste momento, em locais como a lezíria de Vila Franca de Xira, encontrar um milhar de íbis não é raro, tendo inclusivamente criado recentemente - a primeira vez que tal foi registado em Portugal./Less than a decade ago, seeing Glossy Ibises in Portugal was a complicated matter. Even just one. Single birds were spotted every now and then. And this was the norm for many years. Until, from single birds, small flock started to be seen. Paúl do Secorio, Palmela -- and Alcochete. From a few birds, flocks of a few dozens were registered. Then the first hundred. A few hundreds. Nowadays, in places like the grasslands of Vila Franca de Xira, to find a thousand ibises is not unusual -- the species has in recent years even been recorded for the first time breeding in Portugal.

Esta abundância recente deve-se a um aumento espetacular das colónias Espanholas - nomeadamente as encontradas em Doñana. Sabemo-lo através do programa de anilhagem que tem marcado centenas de aves no ninho com anihas de cor, passíveis de serem lidas por observadores de aves. Quando uma ave anilhada é detetada no campo e a anilha lida corretamente, os anilhadores ficam com a informação do paradeiro das aves, e os observadores com a informação da proveniência das mesmas./This recent abundance is linked to the spectacular increase of the Spanish colonies -- namely the ones found in Doñana. We know this due to the ringing program that has ringed hundred of nestlings with colour rings, which can be read by birdwatchers. When a ringed bird is found in the field and its ring properly read, ringers obtain information on the whereabouts of the bird and the bird watchers gain knowledge of where the bird came from.

O progressivo aumento nos efetivos destas aves foi registado por inúmeros observadores, que reportavam as suas observações ao Noticiário Ornitológico da Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves - sendo este posteriormente distribuido gratuitamente via email a todos os interessados, e posteriormente compilado no Anuário Ornitológico./The progressive increase in this species' numbers was registered by several bird watchers, who reported their observations to the Noticiário Ornitológico -- this being freely sent by email to all interested parties, and later compiled on a yearbook.

No início do Outono, durante a apanha do arroz, é frequente ver grandes bandos de íbis na lezíria Ribatejana, aproveitando a enorme quantidade de lagostins exóticos (e incrivelmente nocivos para os ecossistemas) que ficam expostos após a drenagem dos arrozais. É portanto uma excelente altura para observar esta espécie, ainda há poucos anos tão rara por estas paragens./In the early Autumn, during the rice harvest, it is frequent to see big flocks of ibises on the Ribatejo grasslands, taking advantage of the huge quantity of exotic Louisiana Crayfish (an invasive species very harmful to ecosystems) exposed by the draining of the rice fields. An excellent time to watch this species, which until recently was so hard to find.

Na Foz do Sizandro, dois juvenis de Pilritos-acanelados têm-se mantido há cerca de duas semanas, juntamente com dois Pilritos-de-colete. Se a segunda espécie cria no norte dos continentes Asiático e Norte-Americano, a primeira cria exclusivamente na América-do-Norte. Em Portugal, até 2009, tinham sido homologados pelo Comité Português de Raridades menos de dez registos./At Foz do Sizandro, two juvenile Buff-breasted Sandpipers have lingered for the last two weeks, along with two Pectoral Sandpipers. If the second species breeds both on the Asian and North-American continents, the first one breeds exclusively in North-America. In Portugal, until 2009 less than 10 records had been accepted by the Portuguese Rarities Committee.

The lady just could not see why the hell did I wanted it, and was worried with the venomous rays of this fish. Disgruntled she handled me the fish head, with dire warnings which included paralysis and hand atrophy in case of being stung. Drew it with much caution -- after all, I earn a living with my hands.

Do 2º Simpósio Internacional de Urban Sketching, muito haveria a dizer - mas melhor mesmo é ir visitando os múltiplos blogues (partindo, por exemplo do Urban Sketchers central ou do blogue do simpósio) e vendo o que por cá se fez./About the II International Urban Sketching Symposium, a lot could be told -- but better still is to visit the numerous blogs (starting from the Urban Sketchers' blog or from the symposium blog, for instance) and see the turnout of this event.

Coube-nos, a mim e ao João Moreno, a organização de um workshop que tomou o nome de Desenhos Misturados - uma sequência de três exercícios simples, dos quais aqui apresento um deles. A ideia era simples, percorrer a Rua Nova do Almada e, escolher três elementos à escolha, por uma razão qualquer. Podiam ser três portadas diferentes, podiam ser três coisas verdes, podiam ser três pessoas a passar na rua - ou três bebidas num café. Pouco importava - o que importava era que as coisas se relacionassem de um modo qualquer. Alternativamente, poderiam escolher um mesmo objeto/sujeito e representá-lo sob três pontos de vista diferentes, ou a três escalas diferentes./It was up to João Moreno and me to organise a workshop that was named Sketch Mix - a sequence of three simple exercises, one of them featured here. The idea was simple, walking along Rua Nova do Almada and choosing three elements -- for whatever reason one would fancy. These could be three different doors, three green things, three people walking -- or three drinks at a café. What was important was that the subjects related among themselves in some way. Alternately, one subject could be chosen and represented under three different perspectives, or three different scales.

Pouco tempo tivemos nós, instrutores, para desenhar. Optámos por falar mais com as pessoas individualmente, estando os participantes dispersos um pouco por toda a rua - o que no final se traduzia em cerca de 15 minutos disponíveis para desenhar. Aqui fica o resultado do primeiro dia - três elementos vistos nas montras da Rua Nova do Almada./We, instructors, had little time to sketch. Our approach was more towards speaking with participants individually, and since they were dispersed throughout the street, this meant that we had something like 15 minutes available for sketching. Here is the result of day one -- three elements seen while window shopping at Rua Nova do Almada.

The Famous Grouse

Apesar de ser já Maio, o tempo não estava propriamente risonho. Partira de Dublin de manhã cedo rumo a Sally Gap, e a cada quilómetro percorrido após ter entrado nas montanhas de Wicklow, a visibilidade reduzia-se. Quando cheguei a Sally Gap a paisagem era desoladora - nevoeiro e chuva-tocada-a-vento. As esperanças de encontrar Lagopos-vermelhos esmoreciam./Even though it was May, the weather was not properly smiling on me. Had left Dublin early that morning, heading to Sally Gap, and with each passing kilometer after entering the Wicklow Mountains visibility decreased. When finally made it to Sally Gap, the scenario was dismal -- fog and beaten-by-wind-rain. Hopes of finding Red Grouse dwindled.

Os Lagopos-vermelhos são uma sub-espécie do Lagopo-ruivo, que ao contrário deste último mantêm a plumagem encarniçada durante todo o ano. Imortalizados nos rótulos do uísque 'the Famous Grouse', encontram-se apenas na Grã-Bretanha e Irlanda (as aves Irlandesas são por vezes considerados como um taxon distinto do das Britânicas), em charnecas de urzais e terras altas. A população Irlandesa foi estimada em cerca de 4200 aves, encontrando-se a espécie em declínio e em franca contração geográfica - tendo perdido cerca de 50% dos habitats tradicionais de cria. As razões deste declínio parecem dever-se a uma combinação de fatores, desde florestação (a espécie não tolera habitats arborizados) a sobre-pastoreio, passando por excessiva extração de turfa a fragmentação das populações (estudos com as aves Britânicas revelam que cerca de 95% das aves faz deslocações de apenas um quilómetro a partir do local onde foram anilhadas). As coisas não estão fáceis para o Lagopo-vermelho. E também não estavam fáceis para mim, algures em Sally Gap./Red Grouse are considered to be a sub-species of Willow Grouse, but unlike these they keep their reddish plumage throughout the year. Immortalized on the labels of 'the Famous Grouse' whisky, they are found only in Ireland and Great Britain (Irish birds are sometimes considered to be a distinct taxon from the British birds), in upland heathen moors. The Irish population is thought to have some 4200 birds, and the species is declining throughout its range, having disappeared from 50% of the original breeding range. The reasons for this decline seem to be due to a number of factors, like afforestation (this species avoids forests) to over-grazing, excessive turf extraction and fragmentation of the populations (studies with British birds reveal that 95% of the ringed birds that were captured were found about a kilometer away from the ringing place). Things are not seeming bright for the Red Grouse. And things were not seeming bright for me, somewhere in Sally Gap.

Sem ver vivalma (humana ou aviana), fui avançando pela R115, fazendo pontos de escuta de quando em vez. Nada - tirando a chuva correspondente a cada ponto de escuta. O nevoeiro adensou-se, e os ânimos iam-se afundando cada vez mais. Vinguei-me numa maçã. Entre dentadas, pareceu-me ouvir qualquer coisa. Abri a janela do carro e pus-me à escuta. De novo - e desta vez não houve dúvidas. No meio do nevoeiro, um macho de Lagopo-vermelho cantava./Without a soul in sight (human or avian), I kept going through the R115, stopping every now and then to listen to bird sounds. Nothing -- apart from the rain involved in every listening stop. The fog grew thicker, the hopes plunged deeper. Took revenge on an apple. In between bites, thought I had heard something. Opened the car window and listened. Again -- and this time there were no doubts. Somewhere, from the fog, a male Red Grouse was singing.

Sabia agora que havia aves por perto. Dar com elas, no entanto, era outra história. Camuflados de modo soberbo, os Lagopos-vermelhos encontram-se perfeitamente adaptados para a paisagem desolada de Sally Gap. E a esta camulfagem, juntemos a névoa que teimava em persistir. Mas havia aves - portanto, era uma questão de tempo até as ver - e dentro dessa questão, a questão era saber se eu tinha tempo suficiente. Varrendo as colinas mais próximas com o olhar, os olhos foram parar num vulto que o meu cérebro mais habituado a outras aves mais meridionais encaixou na categoria de 'perdiz'. No alto de um morro, um macho de Lagopo vigiava-me./I knew know that there were birds nearby. Finding them, however, was another story. Superbly camouflaged, Red Grouses are perfectly adapted to the bleak landscape of Sally Gap. And to this, add up the persisting fog. But they were there, so it was a matter of time until I saw them -- the question was to know if I had enough time for that. Scanning the nearest hills, found my eyes landing on a silhouette that my brain (more used to southwestern European birds) read as 'partridge'. High on a hill, a male Red Grouse was watching me.

Lagopo-vermelho/Red Grouse ♂, Lagopus lagopus scoticus

Optei por não me aproximar demasiado. A ave estava claramente consciente da minha presença, pelo que pensei para mim que um Lagopo esboçado à distância era melhor que dois no mato a desandar. Tirei algumas notas, entre o vai-vém de binóculos e equilibrismo do caderno nos joelhos. Vinte minutos volvidos, tentei aproximar-me um pouco. Não gostou, adentrou-se nos tojos. Foi-se./Decided not to get too close. The bird was clearly aware of my presence, thought to meself 'a sketched Grouse in the book is better than two running birds in the bush'. Took some notes, between the dance of the binoculars and the jugglling of the sketchbook on the knee. Twenty minutes later, thought I should try to get closer. The bird did not liked it -- and disappeared in the gorse. Gone.

Tornou a aparecer alguns metros mais acima. Grato pela segunda oportunidade, decidi não tentar mais nada. Fiquei ali, mais vinte minutos, a tentar esmifrar o mais que conseguisse dos binóculos. A chuva caia agora miúdinha, o que não parecia incomodar em nada a ave. Dividia o tempo entre manter-me debaixo de olho e debicar lentamente o solo. E eu dividia o tempo entre os binóculos e o caderno. E tudo corria bem, até me lembrar que tinha um compromisso em Dublin, pelo que tive de apressadamente bater em retirada. Acenei à ave ao de leve e segui em direção a Blessington./It reappeared a few meters away. Thankful for this second opportunity, decided to stay put. So ended up staying another twenty minutes, milking the binoculars for what they were worth. Rain now fell lightly, which did not seem to bother the bird. It was either keeping a watchful eye on me or slowly picking up food from the ground. And I was either looking at it through the binoculars, or looking at the sketchbook. And all went well -- until I remembered I had an appointment in Dublin, and had to hastily make a move. Gently bid the bird goodbye and headed off to Blessington.

Os bandos de Guincho-comum já estão por aí, muitos ainda em plumagem nupcial (e por vezes acompanhados por Gaivotas-de-cabeça-preta). E desta vez acompanhados por juvenis, que pela primeira vez transcorrem a distância entre as zonas de cria e as de invernada./Flocks of Black-headed Gulls have arrived, many still in breeding plumage (sometimes found along some few Mediterranean Gulls). And now in the company of juvenile birds, migrating for the first time from their breeding grounds to their wintering quarters.

III De Vuelta con el Cuaderno - Teruel - parte 03

Aqui ficam os últimos esboços feitos durante o curso - para mim, dos mais interessantes do conjunto. Há alguns anos atrás, tomei conhecimento da existência de flautas feitas a partir de ossos de abutres - uma prática milenar que remonta pelo menos há 35000 anos. Tinha lido que algures por Espanha, em Aragão mais precisamente, esta prática ainda persistia apesar de ser já muito rara. Tendo chegado a Teruel pensei: "Espera lá - estou em Aragão..." - e mais, um dos outros oradores convidados do curso era Severino Pallaruelo, grande conhecedor da região Aragonesa. Severino conhecia o filho de um ex-pastor que ainda fabricava flautas. Não tardou muito até nos encontrarmos num carro, juntamente com outros três participantes, rumando a Alcaine, que de Teruel ainda distava mais de uma hora./The last sketches from the course - for me, the most interesting from the lot. Some years ago, learned of the existence of flutes crafted from the bones of vultures -- a practise that dates back to at least 35000 years. Had read that somewhere in Spain -- in Aragon, to be more precise -- this practise still persisted, though its occurrence was now very rare. Upon arriving to Teruel, thought to myself: "Hold on -- I am in Aragon..." -- and, lo and behold, one of the guest speakers of the course was Severino Pallaruelo, a man with extensive knowledge of the Aragonese region. Severino knew the son of a former shepherd that still crafted flutes. It was not long before we in a car along with three other sketchers, moving towards Alcaine -- a village more than an hour away from Teruel.

Subimos juntos a um monte frente à aldeia, vista previligiada sobre a mesma, sobre as fragas e sobre o vale do rio Martín. Cipriano foi-nos contando como aprendeu a fazer aquelas flautas quando ainda era pastor, como não conhecia mais ninguém que ainda as soubesse fazer, e de como um dia uma equipa de Portugueses lhe trouxeram duas asas de abutre para que as transformasse em flautas. Uma dessas flautas, disse-nos, estaria num museu em Lisboa. O Sol foi descendo sobre o vale, por entre o coro de Andorinhões-reais e Gralhas-de-bico-vermelho, enquanto falávamos um pouco de tudo, desde a entrevista dada a um canal televisivo que Cipriano tinha dado recentemente (creio), às Cabras-ibéricas que por ali havia (mas que infelizmente não vi, apenas excrementos), à produção de tomates deste ano (a colheita tinha já sido feita)./Cipriano, Mayor of Alcaine came to greet us along with his father, Cipriano Gil. Together we climbed a hill right in front of the village, a vantage point over it, the cliffs and the river Martín valley. Cipriano began telling us how he learned to craft the flutes when he was still a shepherd, how he did not knew of anyone else alive that would know how to make one, and how one day a group of Portuguese brought him two vulture wings for him to create two flutes. One of those flutes, he told us, would be in a museum in Lisbon. The Sun began to set over the valley, amidst a choir of Alpine Swifts and Choughs, while we spoke of an interview Cipriano gave to a television channel, of the Iberian Goats that could be found throughout those hills (I saw none, but did saw goat scat), and of this year's tomato harvest (already done).

Convidou-nos a ver as flautas. Seguimos colina abaixo até casa dele, onde nos esperava a sua esposa. Entrámos e foram-nos gentilmente servidas bebidas e um pequeno lanche. Surgiram então dois pequenos artefactos ósseos - flautas ligeiramente arqueadas, com cerca de 25cm de comprimento, com entalhes em cruz. Uma, mais brilhante, Cipriano sublinhava, havia sido feita a partir de ossos do abutre Português (era de facto mais brilhante, mas não creio que a nacionalidade afecte o lustro ósseo). A nosso pedido, Cipriano tocou um pouco - e surpresa, soava mais a gaita-de-foles que a flauta. Gaita era também o termo com que se referia aos instrumentos musicais. Foi por esta altura que Cipriano (filho) nos trouxe um póster sobre flautas ósseas, produzido pela equipa de zoo-arqueologia do Instituto Nacional de Arqueologia - estava explicado onde em Lisboa se encontra a flauta. Perguntei ao antigo pastor se o podia desenhar, ao que me disse que sim. E assim estivemos durante cerca de 15 minutos, a desenhar um dos últimos (o último?) fabricante de flautas de osso de abutre./Cipriano invited us to see the flutes. We followed downhill to his house, where his wife awaited. Inside we went, and drinks and a small meal was kindly offered. It was then that two small bone artifacts were produced -- slightly curved flutes, roughly one foot long, with cross carvings. One, shinier, Cipriano mentioned, had been crafted from the bones of the Portuguese vulture (it was shinier indeed, but I have my doubts that nationality affects sheen). Upon request, our host played a bit -- and surprise, surprise, it sounded more like a bagpipe than a flute. At about this time, Cipriano (son) brought us a poster on bone-made flutes, produced by the zoo-archaeology research group of the Instituto Nacional de Arqueologia -- explaining thus where in Lisbon was the before mentioned flute. I asked the former shepherd if I could sketch him, and got his consentment. And so we spent around 15 minutes depicting one of the last (the last?) artisan of vulture-bone flutes.

Não me importava mesmo nada de ter passado mais tempo em Alcaine, mas ter lá ido umas poucas horas já foi bom. Muito bom, mesmo./The night was well on its way when we said goodbye and headed back to Teruel, thankful to this man and his family for their kindness and willingness to meet us. I would not have minded the slightest bit to have stayed longer in Alcaine, but even these few hours spent there were good. Very good indeed.

As garças de grande porte pareciam sofrer mais com o calor que os pequenos Carraceiros e Garças-brancas-pequenas - arfavam de asas abertas unidas em concha. E assim se mantiveram até as temperaturas baixarem um pouco, o que me permitiu desenhá-las com calma (interessava-me particularmente a Garça-vermelha, que obviamente foi a que menos tempo me concedeu)./Still sketches from the same visit to the Alverca Salt Ponds. The herons seemed to suffer more with the heat than the Cattle and Little White Egrets -- panting with stretched wings that closed like a bowl. And in this position they stayed until temperatures dropped a little, which allowed me to sketch them leisurely (I was particularly interested in sketching the Purple Heron, obviously that one bird was the one that gave me the least amount of time as a model).

Mas as ameaças que recaem sobre as colónias são muitas - predação natural, cães e ratos, pisoteio e distúrbio das colónias por actividades humanas, fazendo com que o sucesso reprodutor seja baixo. Talvez demasiado baixo para a viabilidade das populações Portuguesas, a longo prazo./Forced out of the coastal sand dunes by summer activities, the Little Terns are now, as breeders, mostly confined to salt ponds and other less-suitable habitats to which they had to adjust to. É quase inevitável em cada saída de campo - tomar notas do que vemos, gráficas ou escritas. Geralmente apenas do que de menos usual observamos nos locais visitados - a primeira observação de uma determinada espécie, números invulgares de uma outra ou uma observação precoce de um migrador. Outras vezes anotamos tudo - onde fomos, qual a área percorrida e todas as aves que detetámos. E terminada a saída, as notas geralmente ficam guardadas - e por vezes esquecidas. O que é pena, pois têm potencial para mais./It is almost unavoidable in every field outing--to take notes of what we see, either drawn or written. Often we only take notes of what is more unusual, such as the first observation of a certain species, unusual numbers of another, or the early record of a migrating species. Sometimes we take more substantial notes--where we were, what was the area covered and all the birds we detected. And once the fieldtrip has ended, these notes are kept, but often forgotten. Which is a shame, for they have potential to become more.

Foi com base nesta ideia que surgiu o projeto eBird. A ideia é simples - criar uma enorme base de dados com as nossas observações ornitológicas. With an incredible number of over two million checklists per month (mostly from the United States and Canada), not only the distribution of birds in their breeding and wintering ranges can be mapped, but also their migration routes. Through these maps, different migration strategies of birds become clear . Take, for example, the case of two species of Wrens, that until recently belonged to the same species as the Eurasian Wren we find in Portugal. (Note how the data shows that the Western North-American species is essentially a resident species, as opposed to the Eastern species which migrates North to breed). Or how distribution maps can be fine-scaled to reflect the terrain--in this case, the Wood Thrush's distribution map, in which it becomes evident how this species avoids the higher altitudes of the Appalachian mountain range. This tool was also used in the dramatic Gulf Spill to map out the effects of this environmental disaster by keeping track of oiled birds.

All observations count--and with them is weaved the huge web of information that is eBird.

If you usually take field notes about what you have watched, why not give those notes a second life and help to map and quantify the bird populations? If you have never written down any notes, why not try it out? At a grassland, or seated at your favourite public garden, take notes of what you see: how many species you can detect, and how many of each species can you count. Those notes can be as simple as marking the presence of an Eurasian Blackbird at a garden (tick!) or as descriptive as reporting all eleven Eurasian Blackbirds that you have seen during an thirty-minute walk at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation gardens--four adult males, three females, two juvenile birds, and for the remaining two you were not quite sure as you only heard their contact calls--as well as the other bird species. And from this simple observation exercise you will see how you will start noticing things that had been unnoticed before.

A 5 metros de onde me encontrava, um Peneireiro juvenil pousou momentaneamente num poste, perto de uma vala - algo que não agradou a um macho territorial de Tecelão-de-cabeça-preta (uma espécie introduzida) que expressou a sua fúria arrufando as penas e emitindo uma série de sons metálicos. Eventualmente o Peneireiro levantou vôo, e o Tecelão desapareceu no meio do caniçal./It is that time of the year when the young Black-shouldered Hawks are forced out of their parents' territory and off to adulthood. 5 meters from where I was sitting, a juvenile Hawk stopped for a moment on a fence post next to a ditch -- which was not appreciated by a territorial male Black-headed Weaver (an introduced species) who expressed his fury by ruffling his feathers and issuing a series of metallic calls. Eventually the Hawk took off, and the Weaver disappeared into the reeds.

É possível que as respostas a estas questões sejam reveladas através deste projeto. Algumas já se conhecem, podendo agora ficar compiladas nesta que será uma obra de referência./This project will allow for a better knowledge of distribution, abundance and fenology of the Portuguese wintering and migrating birds. Is the Snow bunting a regular wintering species? Where can one find the highest concentrations of Black-tailed godwits? And what is the distribution of the Black-necked grebe? Some of these answers might be revealed throughout this project. Some are already known and can be gathered on this book that will surely become a reference work.

Numa barra de areia de um afluente do rio Solimões, onde repousavam Talha-mares-americanos, Trinta-réis-grandes e Trinta-réis-anões, uma ave até então imperceptível na areia branca levantou vôo./At a sand bar of a tributary of the Solimões river, where Black Skimmers, Large-billed and Yellow-billed Terns roosted, a bird that had remained imperceptible on the sand took off.

Confiando no seu mimetismo, o Bacurau-das-praias pousou pouco mais à frente num tronco. Aproximei-me com cautela e sentei-me. A uns 20 metros da ave, fiquei meia hora a interpretar forma e padrão, e a tirar apontamentos. Levantei-me sem pressas e fui desenhar os Talha-mares./Trusting its mimicry, the Sand-coloured Nightjar landed on a log not far away from where it started. I carefully bridged most of the distance between me and the bird and sat down. Spent about half an hour interpreting shape and patter and collecting notes, 20 meters from the bird. Slowly rose and went sketching the Black Skimmers.

Abril é também o mês de passagem dos Maçaricos-galegos, rumo a paragens boreais. Apesar de alguns poucos passarem o Inverno na nossa costa, a esmagadora maioria inverna ao longo da costa Africana. Durante este mês (e no próximo) é possível ver bandos alimentando-se, repousando ou em migração ao longo da costa./April is also a month of migration for the Whimbrel, flying North to boreal latitudes. Although some spend Winter on the Portuguese coast, the vast majority finds its wintering grounds along the African coast. During this month (and the next) it is possible to see flocks feeding, resting, or migrating along the coast.

A baía, vista previlegiada para ambas as margens do Tejo, não se encheu de fogo de artifício como noutras alturas. Sinal dos tempos depressivos que correm - e dos outros mais negros, nos asseguram, que estão por vir./By the Seixal bay, hundreds have gathered to watch the concerts of Jorge Palma and Deolinda, and celebrate the 25th of April of 1974. The bay, a privileged place to watch both shores of the Tagus, didn't filled up with fireworks like before. A sign of the depressive times - and of the darker still, we are told, yet to come.

De passagem. Ou de como 100g de ave se preparam para percorrer a distância entre a praia da Cruz Quebrada e o Ártico Siberiano - cerca de 6000km em linha reta. Ou os cerca de 4400km até ao norte da Gronelândia. Seja como for, o pequeno Pilrito-das-praias tem ainda uma longa viagem à sua frente até chegar às áreas de nidificação./Passing by. Or how 100g of bird get ready to bridge the distance between Cruz Quebrada beach and the Siberian Arctic - about 6000km apart as the crow (Sanderling?) flies. Or roughly 4400km until the north of Greenland. Whichever route, the little Sanderling still has a long journey ahead before reaching nesting grounds.

Em repouso/Resting - Cruz Quebrada, Oeiras

A população invernante em Portugal tem sido avaliada em cerca de um milhar de indivíduos. No entanto este número parecia encontrar-se muito sub-avaliado, uma das razões pelas quais surgiu o Projecto Arenaria. Dividindo o setor costeiro em quadrículas de 5 por 5km, voluntários percorreram as praias e arribas Portuguesas contando esta e outras espécies de aves num esforço concertado por quantificar as aves costeiras que utilizam o litoral. Em 2009 o número de Pilritos-das-praias que invernam em Portugal foi revisto, tendo sido contadas mais 2500 aves./The wintering population in Portugal has been evaluated in about a thousand birds. However this figure seemed rather undervalued - which was one of the reasons for the creation of Projecto Arenaria. Dividing the coastal sector in squares of 5 x 5km, volunteers have walked the Portuguese shore in an attempt to quantify the numbers of coastal birds. In 2009 the number of wintering Sanderlings in Portugal was recalculated, with over 2500 birds counted.

Com a chegada da Primavera, regressam as Codornizes (ou grande parte do contingente reprodutor, uma vez que algumas invernam por cá). É difícil conceber que uma ave como esta seja uma migradora de longo curso, indo invernar a sul do Sara. Aqui na Primavera, na Serra Leoa (por exemplo) no Inverno./With the arrival of Spring, the Common Quails return (or the better part of the breeding population, some however winter here in Portugal). It is hard to conceive that a bird such as this is a long course migrant, wintering south of the Sahara. Here during Spring, in Sierra Leone by Winter.

Codorniz ♂, Coturnix coturnix/Common Quail ♂

Nos Açores, onde também ocorre (sendo considerada por alguns autores uma sub-espécie endémica da Macaronésia), a Codorniz é uma espécie residente (não-migradora). O facto de existir nestas ilhas Atlânticas é mais uma prova da sua capacidade voadora./On the Azores, where it also occurs (being considered as an endemic Macaronesian sub-species by some authors), the Quail is a resident species (non-migrant). The fact that it lives on these Atlantic islands is another proof of its flight capacities.

Foi para mim uma grande surpresa ver-me integrado na lista de convidados - e aproveito para agradecer o convite à Clara Marta, que teve a amabilidade de me contatar e me o endereçar./De vuelta con el Cuaderno is back, this time dedicated to the theme Los Cuadernos de campo, de investigación y documentación (field, research and documentation sketchbooks). It was a great suprise to see me among the guest speakers - and I seize the opportunity to thank Clara Marta, who was kind enough to contact me and address the invitation.

Garças-reais / Grey Herons

Uma semana volvida e as crias de Garça-real estão quase irreconhecíveis. Praticamente da dimensão de aves adultas e totalmente emplumadas, as duas garças vivem os últimos dias no ninho por entre ensaios de vôo e cuidados com as penas./One week after the Grey Heron chicks are almost unrecognisable. Roughly the size of adult birds and fully feathered, the two herons spend their last days at the nest between preening and flight attempts.

Vida no ninho: tratando das penas.../Life at the nest: preening...

Apesar de bem alimentadas, a competição é grande, ocorrendo frequentemente escaramuças. Arrufando as penas, as crias medem forças e definem hierarquias. Por vezes a mais desenvolvida chega mesmo a matar a mais fraca. Neste ninho porém as hipóteses de se verificar este comportamento - conhecido como Cainismo - são praticamente nulas uma vez que ambas as crias se equivalem./Even though well fed, competition is great amongst the young birds, with frequent skirmishes. Ruffling their feathers, the chicks compare strengths and define hierarchies. Sometimes the strongest one ends up killing the weakest. At this nest however chances for this behaviour - known as Cainism - to happen are practically none since both chicks have approximately the same size and strength.

No entanto grande parte do dia consiste de esperas. Cada vez mais longas, agora que as pequenas garças se encontram quase totalmente desenvolvidas e se conseguem defender por si. Em breve serão capazes de voar - e começarão a sua vida autónoma. E tudo correndo bem, daqui a três anos estarão a tratar da próxima geração de Garças-reais./However the better part of the day consists of waiting. Now that the little Herons are almost fully developed and can defend themselves, the waits keep increasing. Soon they will be able of flying - and will begin their independent life. And, if all goes well,in three years they will be caring for the next generation of Grey Herons

II International Urban Sketching Symposium - Lisbon

Julho aproxima-se - e com ele o II International Urban Sketchers Symposium. Ultimam-se os preparativos de apresentações e seminários, e neste momento o encontro conta já com cerca de 80 participantes inscritos provenientes de 15 países diferentes - mais uma razão para renovar o convite à inscrição a todos os interessados. Sem dúvida será um grande evento de partilha, descoberta e aprendizagem. Imperdível./July is closing in - and with it, the II International Urban Sketchers Symposium. Presentations and workshops are being fine tuned, and to date the meeting has almost 80 registered participants, from 15 different countries - yet another reason for all who are interested to register. It will be, no doubt, a great event of sharing, discovery and learning. Unmissable.

Na Lagoa da Estacada (que liga à Lagoa de Albufeira através da Lagoa Pequena), a época de nidificação das Garças-reais vai avançada. Num dos ninhos construídos no caniçal, uma garça adulta vigia duas crias recém-emplumadas./At Lagoa da Estacada (which links to Lagoa de Albufeira through Lagoa Pequena), the breeding season of Grey Herons is well on its way. On one of the nests built in the reed beds, an adult heron guards two chicks.

Os primeiros tempos da vida destas aves são passados numa plataforma de cerca de 2 metros, o que pode ser um pouco entediante para uma cria curiosa./The first stages of the life of these birds are spent on a platform of roughly 2 meters, which can prove to be rather tedious for a curious chick.

De quando em vez as crias abrem as asas ensaiando o vôo, apesar da plumagem ainda insuficientemente formada./Every now and then the chicks open their wings and try to fly, in spite of their insufficiently formed plumage.

À chegada do outro progenitor, o primeiro parte para pescar ou caçar. As crias agitam-se num frenesim, tentando captar a atenção do adulto. Uma delas consegue dominar o bico da ave adulta, engolindo uma taínha inteira. A outra cria terá de esperar - e tentar ter mais sorte no regresso do progenitor./Upon the arrival of the other parent, the first one leaves to fish or hunt. The chicks get very agitated, trying to capture the adult bird's attention. One of them manages to control the beak of the adult bird, swallowing a whole mullet. The other chick will have to wait - and try to be luckier when another parent returns.
